Monogrammed Pilsner Beer Glasses Make Great Gifts

A monogram is made up of overlapping letters or other graphemes to form a single symbol. A grapheme, analogous to a phoneme, is the smallest distinguishing unit in a written language. It may be an alphabetic character, a punctuation mark, Chinese symbol, numerical digit or other individual symbol from any of the world's written languages. These graphemes often form a company logo, for example, on monogrammed pilsner beer glasses.

A series of unconnected characters is properly referred to as a cypher, and not a monogram. For example, EIIR, indicating Queen Elizabeth II of England, is called a royal cypher and not a monogram. Monograms and cyphers are often recognizable as logos.

The earliest monograms appeared on coins as far back as 350 B. C. In Ancient Greece, these monograms represented the city in which the coin was issued. For example, the conjoined letters, 'A' (alpha) and 'X' (chi) were used to identify coins from Achaea.

One area in which the concept of a monogram has been fully embraced is in the engraving of beer glasses, tankards, pint glasses and beer mugs. They are extremely popular at beer festivals in the United Kingdom, where you will often find a hand engraver from Derby at his stall, personalizing individual tankards and gifts for festival staff and visitors. Customers may even submit their own choice of design to be engraved on their favorite tankard or pint glass.

While hand engraving is a disappearing craft, it is deceptively more economical than engraving by machine. Machines need to be set up for each task. This is a time consuming and expensive process.

Monogrammed pilsner beer glasses are often used to commemorate special events, such as the beer festivals described above. They make terrific gifts for birthdays, Fathers Day, Mothers Day or anniversaries. Picture a tiny pewter tankard engraved with a baby's name and date of birth as a christening present.
